How Healthy Are Food Advertisements?
“Almost every magazine contains advice on a healthier lifestyle, but we found the food ads were produced to high sugar and salt, low in fiber such as ready meals, sauces and confectionery “says Dr. John Adams, professor of public health at Newcastle University, who led the study.
“Obviously, it is up to each of us to decide what we eat, but if we are constantly bombarded with images of unhealthy food every time we take a magazine while we will be influenced in what we chosen, “she adds.
This means that women sit to enjoy the treat of a cup of tea, a chocolate bar and a magazine unwittingly May be tempted to the same unhealthier diet.
What in the ads?
Researchers at the University of Newcastle and compared the data collected on the nutritional content of foods advertised in the 30 most read weekly magazines during November 2007.
A nutritional analysis of food advertising found that the advertised products are generally much higher in sugar and salt and fiber smaller than the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations.
The study published online January 19 in the European Journal of Public Health shows that more than a quarter of food advertisements (25.5%) were ready for eating, sauces and soups which tend to be rich salt and sugar.
Almost a quarter (23%) of the advertising of foods were classified as “containing fat or sugar, including products such as ice cream, chocolate bars, sweets and lots of sugar drinks pop. These guidelines recommend that government should be used only “sparingly.” More of these ads were found in magazines with a higher proportion of women readers or readers of a lower social class. However, very few ads, only 1.8% were for fruit and vegetables, and they were mainly in the high-end magazines. If you’re fat, maybe you want to look for some slim babes?
